James Barnor Photo Exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts

MiPHS Group Tour, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023

The historic DIA photography exhibit by the Ghanian and UK photographer entitled “James Barnor: Accra/London—A Retrospective”  ran from May 28 through October 15, 2023. This exhibit was co-curated by MiPHS’ Member/Advisor Nancy Barr, DIA’s head of Prints, Drawings and Photography. Nancy gave the group an insightful tour of the Barnor exhibit followed by the same of DIA’s back room.

Approximately 30,000 art patrons attended the exhibit, which included over 170 photographs covering Barnor’s work between the 1950s and the 1980s. Barnor powerfully captured his images from Accra and London with his large and medium format cameras - types of which were on display from MiPHS Member Chuck Fehl's collection.
